Day 3-adding a WordPress Theme and metatags.

by Seamus Walsh on December 18, 2009

Experiment results can be viewed on the right. At about 10:30 this morning, I received a Google alert notifying me of the following post;

I took @joemescher’s, the Social Media Commando,  advice and moved ahead with the Thesis theme for this blog.  Thesis makes it easy to add things like metatags and creating a pleasing user experience.  This morning I downloaded and configured  Thesis and metatags.  There are pros and cons of using a Theme, it is not necessary, but for me worth it because of it’s flexibility and ease of use to customize your site.

New Tip.

In a direct message Joe also reminded me to to start assigning categories to posts. Now that we have enabled Permalinks we can start assigning at the post level for SEO and content categorization purposes.

Total cost $87

Total time; 45 minutes.

Permalink Change as mentioned in comments.

——> Go to WordPress admin, click settings on bottom right, click Permalinks click custom, insert /%category%/%postname%

Seamus,

SEO Tip

*Tip: I recommend that Thesis users, including this website, change their permalink structure to the following:

/%category%/%postname%

This allows you to feature keywords inside your URL’s, making them more friendly to the search engines. Categories ensure that your topic is always represented, so you don’t need to ‘stuff’ irrelevant keywords into your blog post title.

With respect to design, I like the fact you have the rotating images active. By heading over to the ‘rotator’ folder in your custom folder you can replace the images with your own images (just delete or rename the current images and rename your images ‘sample-1′, ‘sample-2′, etc).

Have fun rocking the Thesis Theme!

To change Permalinks go to WP settings (at bottom left), click and permalinks to: /%category%/%postname% (See figure 1).
